New York City's nonprofit sector employs
more than 528,000 people, or about 14% of
total local employment. This is more than
double those in manufacturing, slightly more
than in the FIRE (Finance, Insurance, and Real
Estate) sector, only 5% below the level in gov-ernment
(federal, state, and local combined),
and 15% below the total in wholesale and
retail trade.
Nonprofit employment increased by about
25% during the past decade when overall
employment increased by only 4%.
73% of employees are full-time, and 19% are
part-time. The rest are temporary (5%),
interns (2%), or in the Work Employment
Program (welfare) (1%). |
